Race Reed April 19, 2026 Rewilding and What It Could Actually Look Like (Outside Reading)

After the bison documentary in class I started reading more about rewilding as a broader concept and it's honestly one of the more exciting things I've come across this semester. Rewilding is the large scale restoration of ecosystems by reintroducing species that have been lost, reducing human management, and letting natural processes take over again. The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone is probably the most famous example and the results were remarkable. The wolves changed the behavior of elk, which allowed riverbanks to recover, which changed the flow of rivers. One species created a cascade of change through the entire ecosystem.

It connects directly to what we saw with the bison reintroduction. These animals aren't just nice to have around, they are literally landscape engineers whose absence leaves a hole in how the whole system functions. I think rewilding challenges the idea that human management is always the answer and sometimes the best thing we can do is step back.
