Kel Norris Entry #5: LEED Certificate
These past few weeks, I have been studying material for the Leading in Energy and Environmental Design certificate exam. There are eighty pages of slides for me to work through, but even though it's a lot of information, it's interesting to learn about how LEED plans to integrate sustainable practices into cities and neighborhoods. It touches on many marketing strategies, too, so I'm also learning a little bit about economics in the green industry. What makes me a little sad is the fact that if it weren't for the financial incentives, it'd be a lot harder for LEED to get its foot in the door when it comes to integration. That's just the way things are, though.
I'm working towards this certificate in addition to studying for a degree in Environmental Studies. It'll help in my career prospects, of course, but I'm mainly interested in the content because it covers the topics I'm really looking forward to learning about once I'm further into my degree, like urban planning and the surrounding ecosystem. Most of the classes I'll have to take have more to do with political science, and while I am also interested in this aspect of sustainability, I wish there were more of what I previously mentioned. For that reason, I'm grateful to have learned about LEED, and even more grateful that I get to study for accreditation in all its subjects.
