Ericka McGhee 4/22/26 - Fast Fashion (outside reading)
I read an article about the impacts of fast fashion on the environment. This article was published on www.newrootsinstitute.org. Fast fashion has been around for decades. Which means there are dozens of impacts it has created. Fast fashion is extremely harmful to the environment. It uses an immense amount of water, around 700 gallons per T-shirt. The industry uses water to grow the materials needed to make these clothes, and even more to dye them. The article states that over 20% of global water pollution comes from the fashion industry. Factories dumb the toxic chemicals and dyes they use into nearby bodies of water. This hurts the environment and water quality, causing people in nearby communities to become sick. It also contributes heavily to climate change. The production, transportation, and selling of these clothes create carbon emissions, which have already been a problem recently. Because of the recent popularity of fast fashion, these gas emissions have risen. With the cheap and fast production, the environmental damage increases. It also creates a massive amount of waste because the clothes are made cheaply and quick, which leads them to be worn a few times before they are damaged and cannot be worn. This causes them to be thrown out only a few times after being worn. This leads to a huge amount of unnecessary waste added to landfills. Fast fashion is causing damage that not many can see. It encourages people to buy more clothes because of the prices, and leads to more waste because they are thrown out so quickly. Trends and styles are also always changing, which means that once these clothes go out of style, people are less likely to wear them. Fast fashion has had major impacts on our environment that most people choose to ignore, or just don't see the impacts. Putting an end to the fast fashion industry will help to turn our world back around.
