Ericka McGhee - 4/15/26: ownership of water (in class)

Yesterday in class, we finished watching the War on Water documentary. During the second half of this, they discussed how many companies own certain areas of water. The Great Lakes have become a major target of the water industry. Although they are after these resources, they do not care about helping and protecting water. They are only after the money behind it. General Electric is the biggest company after the water market. I found that very interesting because I felt like an electric company wouldn't be fighting as hard to get a hold of a water source. Another company that is heavily involved in the water industry is Nestlé, which doesn't surprise me as much because I know they own a lot of companies in America. Nestlé also granted permission to pump 200 gallons of water per minute. When things like this happen, it causes mass destruction, which we have seen before with the Aral Sea. The Aral Sea was a lake that was so big it was considered a sea. The soviet Union countries began planting cotton and using and owning this water for farms. The Aral Sea has almost completely dried out now, with almost 90% completely gone. At the rate this is going, I'm sure that this will be a recurring problem we continue to face.
