Kel Norris Entry #4: Glen Canyon Revealed
Today, I read an article called Glen Canyon Revealed by Craig Childs. It's a personal narrative about the current state of important waters in the southwest, as well as their history and cultural importance. What I thought was most notable was environmental activist Katie Lee's frustration with the name "Lake Powell," since what it really is, is a manmade resevoir, not a true, natural lake. To me, this highlights the divide between the belief that humans should leave the natural environment alone and the belief that manipulating the environment is okay as long as [x]. It was also interesting to read about how indigenous nations held the Glen Canyon in such high regard. This shows that besides health and the ecosystem, the rivers are important for spiritual reasons, too.
