(Entry #4) Agricultrue and Ecology

 Can Agriculture and Ecology Coexist?

When I think about farming, it seems like something that should naturally fit with the environment. But the way a lot of agriculture is done today actually causes a lot of damage. Things like monocropping and heavy use of fertilizers can wear down the soil and pollute water. For example, runoff from farms along the Mississippi River has created “dead zones” where marine life can’t survive.

At the same time, not all farming is bad. There are more sustainable methods like crop rotation and regenerative agriculture that help keep the soil healthy and support biodiversity instead of hurting it. These methods show that farming doesn’t always have to go against nature.

Being around places like the James River made me realize how connected everything is. What happens on land can eventually affect rivers and ecosystems nearby.
