Braden Gage (Outside Readings)

I read an article about ranching that talked about how ranchers develop a close relationship with the land by actually working on it every day, and it connects a lot to what we talked about in class about phenomenology. Instead of relying on theories or big ideas, ranchers pay attention to what the land is telling them, like when to graze or rest certain areas, which shows a lived experience with the environment. The article describes ranchers as people who understand ecosystems through direct interaction, not just concepts, which reminds me of the idea of "returning to the things themselves." It made me realize that environmental knowledge doesn't always come from science or data but can also come from experience and observation. At the same time, it makes me wonder if this kind of understanding is enough on its own, or if it still needs to be combined with scientific research to fully take care of the environment.
