Race Reed April 22, 2026 Going Fishing and Thinking About It Differently Now (Free Choice)

I've been fishing since I was little and it's always just been something I do to relax without thinking too much about it. This semester has made that harder in the best possible way. Every time I'm out on the water now I find myself noticing things I used to tune out, what the water looks like, whether there are fewer fish than there used to be, what else is living in and around the area.

After reading about the cod collapse and discussing overfishing in class, I also think more carefully about what I'm catching and whether I'm putting it back. Recreational fishing seems harmless at an individual level but we've learned enough this semester to know that individual actions add up. I'm not going to stop fishing but I think I'll be a more thoughtful one going forward.
