4/20/26 Entry #11- First Large Data Center Ban
I recently found out that Maine just passed a statewide bill that would ban large data centers from being built. The bill was passed by both chambers of the legislature and sent to Governor Janet Mills for signature or veto. If enacted, the bill would temporarily ban new data centers that use more than 20 megawatts of power. The reasoning behind this is to give the state time to study the risks and benefits of introducing large data centers into the state lines. Maine is not the only state that is filing bills to limit the presence of data centers. In fact, as of March 9, 2026, 12 other states had introduced bills to pause or limit data centers. This movement is a symbol of the governing systems beginning to acknowledge that states often lack the fundamental protections for residents and taxpayers from the huge and likely not disappearing anytime soon.
